[ Black Hills Photo Gallery - Wyoming Area Attractions - Vore Buffalo Jump ]
The Vore Buffalo Jump is actually a large sinkhole, which is when a cave's
ceiling becomes so thin that it collapses. During the 1970's, a large dig
was performed on the site turning up some amazing finds. During the 1500s,
native americans used this site to hunt buffalo. They would herd the buffalo
up, and then force them toward this sinkhole. When the buffalo went over the
edge, the fall would kill them. Then the native americans could clean them
and haul the meat and various other items back to their nearby villages.
During the dig in the 1970's, a solid layer of bones three feet thick was
found in the bottom of the sinkhole. What makes that more amazing is that
most of the bones were taken from the animals and turned into weapons and
tools. Therefore, only the useless bones made up that layer.
Today, the Vore Buffalo Jump is an undeveloped site that is under the control
of the University of Wyoming's Vore Buffalo Jump Foundation. One day, it
will be developed into a full research and education center.
The Vore Buffalo Jump is located approximately fifteen miles from the Wyoming
/ South Dakota border along Interstate 90. To get to the jump, take the
Beulah exit (if you're coming from the east) or the Aladdin exit (if you
are coming from the west), and take the frontage road that runs along the
north side of the interstate.
